CLIMATE CHANGE CHAMPIONS PROGRAMME
Global warming, one of the major aspects of climate change, refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. There is now overwhelming scientific evidence which suggests that climate change is primarily due to burning of fossil fuels by humans, which releases CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the air. Other human activities, such as agriculture and deforestation, also contribute to the proliferation of greenhouse gases. These gases trap heat within the atmosphere, leading to a range of impacts on our planet.
The various climate change impacts include - rising sea levels due to the melting of the polar ice caps; more frequent and more intense storms; warming ocean temperatures resulting in destabilized marine ecosystems; uneven rainfall patterns leading to flooding and other damage; increased frequency and severity of wildfires and heat waves etc.
The industrial sector is one of the largest consumer of fossil fuels and thus has a very critical role to play in combating climate change. The Tata group is playing a leadership role in the corporate sector on the topic of combating climate change. Our Climate Change Policy clearly mandates all Tata companies to be the benchmark in their segment on carbon footprint and incorporate 'green' perspective in all key organisational processes.
To support this mandate, it is important to create 'Climate Change Champions' within various Tata companies who can appreciate the societal, environmental, and economic implications of climate change. The 'Climate Change Champions Programme' seeks to lay down the fundamental scientific principles behind climate change and global warming, climate change impacts and the issue of mitigation and adaptation -- that is, solutions to dealing with the challenges presented by climate change.
